Is The “Zone Diet” A Scam?

The Zone… love it or hate it?

Wow! There are some scathing reviews out there for Barry Sears’ The Zone Diet. Then you’ll turn around and hear a devout follower who claims they “never felt better!”

Seems The Zone is a little bit like cilantro… you either love it or hate it!
So, what’s the deal with this extremely popular low carb, high protein plan? Does it work? Can you lose weight, keep it off and find better health?

You may be shocked to find out the realities of being in The Zone… (cue creepy Twilight tune)


Cons (False Science!)

Refined carbs are a huge detriment to your health and the Zone Diet discourages consumption of these poor quality foods. Encourages TOO much fat intake and animal protein intake! (Two more health enemies GRRRR!)
Obesity is one of our biggest killers in this country (and others) leading to disease and early death. Followers of The Zone have lost weight. Despite the “science” Sears’ touts, the diet is a very low calorie diet (VLCD) and this is how you lose weight
Very detailed plan for those who need clear definition in a diet. Very detailed plan… who can stick to this?
Encourages grazing (eating small meals frequently), which is the best way to boost your metabolism and avoid overeating. Sears claims he follows his own diet, consuming only 1330 calories per day. The dude is 6’5″ and 205 pounds… if he really did this, he’d be a skeleton by now! He should be eating 2400 calories per day to maintain his current, healthy weight.


The Twilight Zone…

So, the “science” behind The Zone is beginning to sound about as true as an episode of the Twilight Zone (cue music again, or is that overkill?).

Seriously, he says his diet will put you in a zone to lose weight and keep it off. So, yeah, he does tell you not to eat junky, refined carbs, but then he says vegetarian diets are bad for you… that we need to eat tons of animal protein (which can lead to a high fat diet!).

Well, while there are studies that prove a vegetarian diet like Dean Ornish’s vegetarian diet can reverse heart disease, there has never been a study that proves a diet high in saturated fat (from animal sources) lowers your risk of heart disease. Of course it doesn’t! It clogs your arteries Barry!

If you were to follow his diet to some extent, by grazing throughout the day, but adding veggies, some fruit and some whole grains AND limiting your animal protein to only lean sources, a few times a day in appropriate portions… you’d have a chance at weight loss AND boosting your heart health.

Of course, then, that wouldn’t be his diet… which reminds me…

  1. I never tried the Zone, but I have a friend who did and is still going strong and has so far lost 150 pounds! It seems like a plan that you can live with. I think I may look into this one.

    I’ve been eating the way you describe in this paragraph for ten years because after reading most of Sears’s books (including the most convincing to me, The Age-Free Zone), I learned that that’s what he advocates as Zone eating. Plenty of colorful carbs, a limited amount of lean protein, and a little beneficial fat. Did we read different books, you and I?

      Did you read the same book?
      this is not the Atkins diet. Yes it is low cal, low fat. but the protein content is not huge and you can have carbs. the whole idea is to keep your glycemic blood levels balanced so you don’t spike your insulin levels.

      I was hooked on energy drinks and now I have energy and do not crave the sugary foods anymore…after only one week.

  3. Hi, I love your site! I just want to say I followed the zone diet a few years ago and while excersizing regularly, I found it easy to follow, it regulated my blood sugar as I am hypoglycemic and had a ton of energy. I don’t think it helped me lose weight but ate healthy and often.

    Would love to see a review on Bios life slim drink. I have a relative promoting it and I don’t like these pyramid type schemes, and done expect much, but he loves it and is a diabetic who swears by it. Thanks you 🙂
