Does “Slim Shots” Really Work?

Henry‘s Rating: 1.0 / 5.0

Have you seen the Slim Shots commercials? The cartoon woman discusses how easy it is for her husband to lose weight while she struggles with weight no matter what she does. Enter Slim Shots. This little liquid drink (looks like a coffee creamer) will supposedly solve all your weight loss problems as a woman. But does it? I had to sniff this out… sounds too good to be true!

Ingredients: palm oil, oat oil, water, natural and artificial flavors, aspartame, beta carotene color.

Each shot contains 20 calories, all of which are fat. Oddly enough, though the proprietary blend is 9.3 grams, the palm oil and oat oil only add up to 2 grams of total fat (1 g saturated, 1 g monounsaturated). Hmmmm…

Well, the claim is that palm oil and oat oil (ingredients of Slim Shots) will help turn on your “ileal brake” and help you feel full faster. You take two shots a day for one week, one at breakfast and one at lunch, and thereafter, take one shot a day.

The Claim

The Problem

Slim Shots will help you feel full, faster.
Specifically marketed towards women to help them get the “edge” they need.
Lack of proven studies as well as conflicting studies.
Lack of logic in addressing the real weight loss needs.Ingredients that may actually harm your efforts at weight loss.

The truth? While some studies on Olibra (palm and oat oil product) show reduced appetite amongst participants, other studies show no change in appetite. Why? Well because one of the conclusions drawn was that “In conclusion, the Olibra® emulsion exerted a suppressive effect on the area under the curve of appetite ratings over 3 h in normal weight women aged 18 to 30 years. The Olibra® emulsion did not affect subsequent energy intake in either group.”

Hmmm… normal weight women. 18-30 years old. And ultimately, it “did not affect subsequent energy intake in either group.” In other words, they still ate the same amount.

So, you can easily see that these nifty little creamers may not have any effect on your appetite. It’s important to point out that the reason women have a tougher time losing weight than men is because a woman’s body is designed to store more fat. As women get older, they also experience the same problems men do in terms of a slower metabolism.

In addition, hormonal imbalances can lead to weight gain and hormonal imbalances become more common in women as they reach their mid 30’s and up.

So, what ingredients in Slim Shots do anything about these problems??? NADA!

Worst of all, Slim Shots uses artificial sweeteners and flavors. Guess what this means? Your body “thinks” it’s getting sugar, and then when blood glucose levels do not go up (indicating you’ve eaten enough and satisfied your body’s needs), your brain signals cravings for MORE sugar. Studies on rats who were given artificial sweeteners indicated that the cravings for more and more sweetener were similar to the cravings a heroin addict may feel during withdrawal. YIKES!

So What Can You Do To Really Lose Weight?

Ultimately, you need to stop listening to the marketers and start realizing what your weight loss issues happen to be. One of the best ways to start figuring this out is to keep a food diary and really start looking at your diet. Here are some common food choices that can lead to weight gain, and also, why:

1. White carbs: They contain very little fiber and usually, a lot of sugar (sometimes high fructose corn syrup… bad, bad!). The lack of fiber leads to poor digestive health and weight gain. Diets high in fiber help cleanse the body, optimizing digestion and nutrient absorption. The sugar leads to higher than normal blood glucose, poor insulin response, weight gain and sugar cravings.

2. Highly processed foods: Chemicals, chemicals, chemicals… these artificial additives are screwing up your hormones!

3. Foods high in saturated or trans fat. These foods are high in calories AND they clog your arteries. They also produce more free radicals during digestion than any other foods, which can lead to poor overall health and hormonal imbalance.

And by the way, palm oil is a saturated fat. Yup. It’s one of those nasty fats that is implicated in atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). It increases total cholesterol.

Great download! I am a real skeptic – especially with downloads, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by your write-up. It makes sense! A friend recommended Sensa and after reading your site, I am (once again) too skeptical to try.”

Thanks again,

  1. I actually thought it had a good taste and was great with coffee BUT it does nothing to supress your appetite or help you lose weight (I honestly think it makes you hungrier). I won’t be buying it again though – for a coffee creamer it’s just too expensive and not healthy at all!

  2. In March 2010 I began Slim Shots taking only one per day. It suppressed my
appetite (it worked) and I started losing weight, increased exercising with walking, stationary bike and calacentics and changed my eating habits.
I lost 25 lbs in 3 months. Then in the 4th month it stopped working. I wanted to
lose 10 more lbs, but that didn’t happen no matter what I did with Slim Shots. I did regain 15 lbs over the next few months.

  3. I spent 20 bucks on a box of those shots last year and didn’t lose One pound. I’m one of the women in the “normal” weight category explained in the article lol, but I’m a college student so it’s getting harder to keep weight from sneaking up on me here and there. Long story short, those shots completely threw off my digestive track. My stomach felt horrible, and then I started getting serious headaches on top of that so I quit using them after a week. I kinda’ liked their commercial though, too bad the product sucked.

  4. This is the first time i have ever tried a dietary supplement to help me lose weight
i am happy with sure shots because the other products wanted you to take up to 3 -6 tablets a day, cant afford that, I will let you know how the slim shots work for me in about a week. patty

  5. What is the address to get a refund on slim shots. It is the worst tasting thing I’ve ever tasted. The nausea lasted all day.
