Phenylethylamine

Ah, the reason behind chocolate’s aphrodisiac qualities… or is it? Phenylethylamine is an “aromatic amine” that humans (and most mammalians and other organisms) produce. It’s a byproduct of some specific chemical reactions in the central nervous system. Though phenylethylamine is responsible for the release of dopamine and norepinephrine (pleasure hormone). Levels of phenylethylamine are low in individuals suffering from depression and autism. So, can this amine be taken in supplement form and improve mood? The supplement and diet pill companies would like you to believe this, however, oral phenylethylamine is rapidly metabolized, which means it has very little effect on the release of pleasure hormones.
