Metformin Weight Loss

Metformin weight loss is a diabetes drug that lowers LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. However, users now promise to it can also help you lose weight. The makers of the drug do not promise this.

Metformin was designed to help those with diabetes, but in studies it was found that users were also losing weight. Currently doctors are not sure why this drug causes weight loss. More studies are being done to see how this is happening and if it guarantees long term weight loss.

One recent clinical trial was conducted by New York Medical College. In this study, 80% of women who took a modified carbohydrate while following the Metformin weight loss plan lost on average 10% of their body weight after one year. And the study also found that 90% of the women in the study who used Metformin for weight loss kept the weight off–and did so for four years.

The use of a Metformin weight loss plan does have side effects. Those reported were gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting and gas.

Metformin comes in 500mg, 850 mg, and 1,000 mg tablets and must be prescribed by a doctor. The normal dose of this drug is 850 to 1,000 mg twice per day. Some people are told to take it three times a day, by their doctors, but make note that 850 mg is the maximum safe dosage to take three times daily.

  1. Is it the Metformin or the diet that is causing the weight loss? My husband has been on Metformin (for type 2 diabetes) for 5 years and has not seen any weight loss. Unfortunately, he does not watch his diet as he should and eats basically the same as he did before being diagnosed with diabetes. So before you think this is a miracle diet pill, why not just try eating a proper diet and get plenty of exercise.

  2. I have taken Metformin for weight loss. It makes your cells believe they have enough sugar already and therefore you don’t need more food (my take on the Dr’s explanation)

It did work…. I could eat a little and then not feel hungry anymore. It did NOT help me to loose weight because I ignored that I didn’t feel hungry and ate more anyway because I like to eat!

I agree with Henry – beware of the claims that a bottle of pills with solve your issues…. only eating less (and better) and exercising more will make you loose weight.
