Arginine is an amino acid found in many foods. Our bodies can also make arginine, so deficiencies are rare. You’ll see plenty of supplement companies with misinformation on arginine, calling it an “essential” amino acid, meaning the body doesn’t make it. Though there are studies that show arginine may be beneficial to heart health because it is a precursor to the production of nitric oxide (which dilates blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow), the studies have not been conclusive enough to warrant a recommendation by doctors. Also, if you are already taking meds for high blood pressure or to increase blood flow (i.e. Viagra), taking an arginine supplement could have an adverse effect. You may find your blood pressure crashing!
