Is Jillian Michaels’ PROGRAM the New Biggest Loser?

Hey… gotta’ love Jillian’s butt-kicking ‘tude on the hit show, The Biggest Loser, but can she pull it off when she can’t be in your face, screaming at you to do another push-up?

Without her tear-jerking “heart to heart” scene, can she help you figure out your eating issues? Can she still help you conquer these problems?

Well, she thinks she can, and for a mere $4.00 a week, you can give her program a shot.

She promises:

• Nutrition guidelines
• Exercises to do at home-no gym required
• Motivation to keep you moving

Does she deliver? Let’s sniff it out!

Jillian is an experienced trainer, no doubt, so her advice on diet and exercise are pretty good and will probably work IF you stick to it. How will you stick to it? Jillian doesn’t come with the program. Nobody will make you do it. Jillian doesn’t cover mindset enough to help you leap over those emotional hurdles to weight loss.
Handy online program to figure your caloric needs, weight loss menu and daily exercises. It’ll cost ya’… or will it? Jillian charges $208* per year whereas other sites such as Livestrong do not charge at all. (*divided into quarterly payments of $52 and can be cancelled anytime after the first payment)
Trusted name – but is this a pro or a con? Can you say brand? I’ll elaborate below…

Is Jillian a trainer or a brand?

Jillian became a household name with the success of The Biggest Loser. A bit of a marketing lesson here… when you become a household name, you become a brand name or more importantly a trusted name.

Jillian’s products are being sold because she has this trust. Unfortunately, she doesn’t exactly deliver. It’s just not the same as having her in your living room or the gym.

You know, it’s awesome that Jillian has been so successful on the show because this means she’s helping these folks who are extremely obese lose weight and get their lives back… and that’s to be commended! Paws up for your achievements Jillian!

BUT…

The folks on the show are also being helped, every step of the way, and most of us do not have that extra help. Heck, if you really had access to a trainer like Jillian, you probably wouldn’t be looking for the knock-off version online.

Worse yet, she tries to sell her supplements within the program. Though she’s never openly said she’s against supplements, she sure leads you to believe that she goes for the old-fashioned, sweat to burn, sort of philosophy.

Her supplements are nothing but stimulants and diuretics, and I’d tell you they were harmful except for the fact that they don’t seem to contain enough of the “proven” (sort of) ingredients like CL… to really effect any change. And, if you are sensitive to caffeine, stay clear…

The Bottom Line!

Yes, her program could help you lose weight and get in shape, but don’t do it because you think there’s anything magic in her advice just because she’s Jillian Michaels. I recommend her for her work on TV, but I can’t really endorse her program.

Instead, I’d recommend a few free things. Check out some of the free tools online to monitor calories. Also, surf for new exercises and healthy recipes.

  1. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO WITH HER DAUGHTER AND HUSBAND SIGNED UP FOR THIS PROGRAM, SHE HAD TO PAY LIKE A MONTH OR SO IN ADVANCE,WHICH WAS NON-REFUNDABLE . SHE STATED THAT YOU COULD PRINT OFF YOUR GROCERY LIST FROM THE SITE AFTER PUTTING IN ALL YOUR INFO. SHE WAS EXCITED AND COULDN’T WAIT TO GET STARTED. AFTER RETURNING FROM HER MARKET ADVENTURE, THAT TOOK HER “THREE” HOURS AND SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR ONLY THE WEEK, SHE PREPARED THE FIRST MEAL.. IT APPEALED TO NO ONE AND THEY WERE STARVING WHEN THE MEAL WAS OVER. THEY FOLLOWED THIS PLAN FOR FIVE MONTHS, EVERY EVENING LOGGING IN ALL THEIR INFO. FOR THE DAY (WHICH IS REQUIRED)THEY STUCK TO IT,DID WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF THEM WITH ONLY 4LBS. LOST BETWEEN ALL OF THEM.   2. Have you investigated the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method? A coworker who very obese used the program this year and I hardly recognized him afterward. Available through local “clinics” such as chiropractors, who monitor your progress and sell you the necessary supplements.

  3. Have you checked out the HCG weight loss program. Some are injections of hcg and some are homeopathic drops you put under your tongue.

    • I answer this one a lot. HCG is a diet that first became popular back in the 70s, but doctors quickly stopped prescribing this as it became clear that this diet is very bad for your body. OF COURSE you will lose weight, but that is because you only consume 500 to 700 calories per day! It has nothing to do with the ‘drops’ or ‘tablets’ that go along with this crazy program. Your body begins to go into starvation mode, and will actually ‘eat’ your own muscles, not a good thing…

  4. What’s the lowdown on Michael Thurman’s Six Week Program? He presents it as a body sculpting exercise program for the morbidly obese similiar to The Biggest Loser and Jilliam Michaels.
    Is it too good to be true? And is it worth the money?

  5. Ugh! Too much shopping, chopping and cooking. Then half of the tomato that I didnt use, together with the avocado, onion, beans, nuts, etc. were thrown out. AND!!! I gained weight!!! A waste of time, effort and money!

  6. its been my second day ! omg my butt hurts my abs hurt and my legs hurt . but i feel good i like when i feel the pain cause i know my body is getting stronger ,healthier and im not going to stop until my 30days are over . so if u feel like stoping ! dont you can do this , put faith in your self . Cause im doing it with you ,your not alone !!

  7. Has anyone done research on the Curves workout??? I have been a member for several years and even though I do feel better, I have dropped not one pound ( actually have gain some) they (Curves) say that the weight gain is muscle??? I’m really not buying that any more.

  8. I don’t use Jillian Michael’s site or whatever, but her DVDs are AWESOME! I have three exercise DVDs and she KICKS YOUR BUTT! It’s like she is right there with you. I have to give her a thumbs up for her videos.

  9. I read below about the meal/grocery lists…I disagree. I do not buy everything on any “meal plan” because it would be ridiculous. If it took them three hours to shop, they clearly don’t know how to shop. I thought most meals were delicious. They are right from Clean Living Cookbook, not something Jillian made up. Perhaps the change from McDonald’s to real food was too much. Also, Jillian’s videos are great workouts. I also was impressed with the strength workout from Bob Harper. The forum on Jillian’s site was helpful for me. I cancelled after I created my own support at home. But when I felt shy about working out and unsure of myself, it gave me a safe place to bounce ideas.

  10. Thank you for your research. I have been telling people for years, the key to losing weight is push aways ” push your bootie away from the table” lol and move. I enjoy your humor on all issues. I have been telling my teenage daughters about your research and what you have found. Teenage girls are always weight conscious and I want them to live healthy.   11. In reading some of the items that you have reviewed, I did not see anything on OxyELITE Pro. Has anyone else inquired about this product? I was told that it is the best “fat-burned” out there? Which one of the millions of “fat-burners” on the market actually assist in what they claim? I am currently doing the integrated version of P90X and Insanity and would like to aid in my results.

  12. I tried 2 of her chocolate protein shakes recently: they did taste good but I had a headache for 3 days after! Maybe all that caffeine u mentioned. Think I will stick to SlimFast when I don’t feel like eating a meal…

  13. Hey ya, I am a 20 year old male and i started doing jillian michaels 30 day shred and i am only on my 7th day and i am proud to say i lost 10 pounds already! Jillian Is the Best around!!!!!!

  14. Jullian work outs are helpful, but in this day and time, some people can only buy certain foods on their budget, and to by anything extra does put a strain on people. I have found, just count my calories, do the work outs that my damage back can do, because I know what my body can & cannot do.

  15. I was going to get her DVD. But after the above comments, I know I can get loads of DVDs and other exercise videos at my local library…FREE! As for on-line diet programs: MyFitness Pal (free), SparkPeople (free) and many others…FREE! And they offer Diet/Nutrition resources, weight loss tracking; all the tools you need plus community support. If you really need to spend money on exercise join your local “Y”. In today’s economy I’m not going to hand over my money for somebody’s brand.

  16. Jillian’s DVDs themselves are very good – I appreciate that the workout is short (30 Minutes), manageable in degrees as my endurance improves. I’m not into paying a subscription fee to any site – but these DVD’s which use the 3-2-1 system are well worth every penny (and not expensive to begin with).

    • I have 30 day shred and agree a it is a good workout well worth the mere $10. She may not be physically present but she makes it clear that because it is a 25-30 min. workout any breaks are not allowed. Did not feel that it was gimmicky at all.
