For once, the diet pill companies might be onto something with garlic in terms of weight loss. Preliminary animal studies show that allicin (phytochemical in garlic) supplementation may help control weight (American Journal of Hypertension). Allicin is destroyed during cooking, so taking garlic in supplement form definitely has its advantages. However, I don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction, the verdict is still out on whether it is truly effective for humans.
Amount needed: 1 gram per day to lower cholesterol.
