Being a bit of a “Chow Hound,” I had to admit that a diet that said you could lose weight without giving up the foods you loved, really got my tail wagging! But that is exactly the claim made by the Food Lovers Diet. Of course I was a bit skeptical… turns out, my animal instincts were right on the nose!
The Food Lovers Fat Loss System promises that you can “eat all your favorite foods all day long and reduce your waistline every week!” That is a pretty dramatic statement for a diet, great for marketing – but how true is it?
Only to a very small degree I am afraid to say. That’s the first fault I find with this and a similar trend in new diets out there. They, like the Food Lover Fat Loss System give the false impression that you can lose weight by not changing your eating habits at all. Nothing can be further from the truth, from a biological standpoint, and from the diet itself.
You see the Food Lovers system and similar diets that also claim you can lose weight without giving up the foods you love “even pizza, hamburgers, or chocolate – all “work” by employing the concept of calorie shifting. With calorie shifting, you simply eat several small meals per day, consuming different amounts of calories each day — low calorie for a few days, followed by higher caloric intake. Within those meals, on any given day – high or low – you can include your “favorites” in moderation, instead of eliminating them entirely as in more traditional diet plans.
Theoretically, this type of eating is supposed to kick-start your metabolism into overdrive forcing your body to burn fat instead of storing it. But does it?
There is nothing new, ground-breaking, or innovative about the Food Lovers Fat Loss System, in fact you can accomplish the same results by increasing your amount of exercise, and changing your eating habits – without purchasing any kind of “system” at all!!
Do you still get to eat your favorite foods on the Food Lovers plan as promised? Yes, but to such a small amount that you will hardly be satisfied and not miss them, which makes it very hard to stick to the discipline required. Which is why Calorie Shifting tends not to be truly effective for long-term weight-loss.
Dieticians and nutritionists agree that calorie shifting can help you to lose weight. They also agree that much of that has to do with a person’s commitment and mental attitude in order for the Food Lovers, or any such calorie shifting system to work. Without commitment and determination you’ll never have the desired success. Diets like this can be very easy to implement, and seemingly to follow, but it’s all up to you to comply with the diet plan or not.
I found a real lack of details on the Diet plan’s official site as to how the program is supposed to work from a physiological or scientific standpoint. They presented many testimonials, but I could not find any clinical trials or studies to back up the designers of the plan’s claims.
Calorie shifting diet plans are also often called “zig-zag” diets, because they “shift” days of lower calorie intake, with days of high calorie intake. The proponents of this method of dieting claim this defeats the body’s “starvation response” of lowering your metabolism when you start to eat less, by then firing up your metabolism to “take on” the extra calories on the days you eat more. But I have not been able to find a single peer reviewed clinical study in any legitimate scientific journal that supports this theory.
Ann Coulston, M.S., R.D, a Stanford University Diet Researcher and former President of the American Dietetic Association said, “Calorie shifting is an interesting concept. I don’t think it ‘turns on fat burning hormones,’ as some proponents claim. We do know that a body starved of calories begins to use calories more efficiently, which enables it to maintain the same weight on less food, but we don’t know that temporary overeating can defeat this starvation reflex…”
Plus, specific to Food Lovers, the “System” is very expensive. My investigation found more than a few people complaining that the Food Lovers weight-loss kit costs a lot, and the on top of that, you still have to buy expensive recommended supplements.
I also found many of the recipes on the plan to be complicated and expensive to shop for.
Also my skeptical sniffer tracked down quite a few customer service complaints on websites such as the “Rip Off Report,” and “Complaints Board” among others; over the company’s aggressive sales tactics, and misleading return policy. There were over 90 complaints listed with the Better Business Bureau over the same kinds of issues – although the Bureau did say that the company did answer most of those satisfactorily.
But overall, this calorie counting canine would have to say “Two Paws Down” to the Food Lovers Fat Loss System.

Great download! I am a real skeptic – especially with downloads, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by your write-up. It makes sense! A friend recommended Sensa and after reading your site, I am (once again) too skeptical to try.”
