Well, these aren’t exactly a scrumptious box of Girl Scout Cookies, they are special diet cookies created by Dr. Sanford Siegal during the 1970’s. Eat 6 cookies per day and a sensible meal in the evening and presto… weight loss to the tune of 15 pounds per month.

Plenty of success stories out there, some that lost more than 150 pounds using this diet. BUT…

Meal replacement diets are popular because they are easy to follow… theoretically. Though meal replacement diets are proven effective at the beginning, many people often gain the weight back.
The cookie offers protein and fiber with few calories. It doesn’t offer much more (vitamins, minerals anyone?). You’ll have to be pretty clever at dinner!
Quick weight loss for those who stick to it and eat sensibly at dinner. Ultimately, Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet is a VLCD… never a good thing… I’ll explain more below!

 

Cookies and Yo-Yo’s… (I do have a point, keep reading!)

A VLCD is a “very low calorie diet”… aka crash diet. You’re not losing weight just because of the cookies. You are losing weight because you are consuming a very low amount of calories (possibly less than 1000 depending on what you eat for dinner).

This of course leads to the dieting “yo-yo” effect whereby you lose a bunch of weight, start eating normally again, gain the weight back (usually more), eat the cookies again, lose weight and so forth.

So, while I don’t disagree entirely with meal replacement diets, they just don’t educate and retrain the dieter to take weight loss measures that will last a lifetime. Isn’t that what you want? Weight loss and a great body for life?
