Can “Sensa” Really Help You Lose Weight?

Henry‘s Rating: 1.0 / 5.0

Sensa claims that if you sprinkle their salt (“Tastant” Crystals) on your food, you will end up eating less – and therefore lose a bunch of weight. Although the idea sounds kind of strange, their presentation and the credentials of the developer (Dr. Alan Hirsch) seem impressive.

However, after receiving numerous requests from the pack, I decided to do a little sniffing around. And the results aren’t exactly pretty…

The Claim

The Problem (Dishonesty)

Dr. Hirsch claims there was a peer reviewed study supporting the claim that subjects lost over thirty pounds using Sensa (versus the control group that lost only 2 pounds). The claim is that this study was peer reviewed by the Endocrine Society. The Endocrine Society says they did not review the study. On ABC’s 20/20 news they stated that, “they were surprised and troubled by the promotional nature of his presentation”. In fact, none of the internal “studies” are confirmed by any respectable body.

More Bad News…

Customers simply don’t appear to be happy. Please go through the comments below. It appears Sensa’s free trial offer is kind of tricky. It is not only on this blog, but all over the web… Community doesn’t lie.

So aside from not losing weight, people are getting charged $89 not once, but twice before they are able to stop the billing. And getting a refund doesn’t seem to be that easy.

In short, it appears to be one of those over aggressive marketing organizations that I love so much.

So What Can You Do to Curb Your Cravings and Lose Weight?

I wish I had a magic bullet for you (I am not creative enough to make up a word like, “tastant crystal”). My understanding is that there are some behavioral therapies that can work if the problem is emotional. But a lot of my pack has found that cravings are often caused by eating the wrong foods. If you start eating the right foods, most cravings go away on their own.

There is a great alternative to Sensa that my pack loves. Unlike Sensa, this program is not scam. It’s a 100% free report I’ve put together that teaches you several proven methods to lose weight. In the Health Hound’s opinion, I would say that it’s a no-brainer not to at least give this free report a try.

"Henry,

Great download! I am a real skeptic – especially with downloads, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by your write-up. It makes sense! A friend recommended Sensa and after reading your site, I am (once again) too skeptical to try."

Thanks again,
Beth

glad i read the reviews before i bought this. need to lose 25lbs and this looked great on tv.

  2. chicago says:

Sensa does not work. Period!!! In that order.

  3. Dee says:

I just wanted to say that I have beeb using Sensa for two months now. I do exercise and eat healthy. I have found using this product has made me gain 3 and half pounds not lose it. Mind you the first month I did lost 2 lbs but now I am up to 3.5 lbs. I never forget to sprinkle. I am not happy with Sensa. Odered it from the Canadain Shopping Channel. I will be phoning them when I finish this to cancel. I do think it is a scam. I was doing much better with losing wieght before I started this stuff. I should of done more research before starting it or buying this product.

I’ve been committed to counting calories AND NUTRIENTS, so I know if I have enough protein, calcium, carbs, fat, etc. I use Sparkpeople.com for calculating my info and am very encouraged by the progress. It’s all in the portion control folks and eating less (or none if you are a saint) processed foods and keeping active. Good luck to us all in 2012 for a healthier body and soul.

  5. Sarah says:

There is no magic supplement that will make you lose weight without exercise. You must commit to a healthier lifestyle. You can also join a fitness community for support.

  6. Cheri says:

I agree, Sensa is just another ploy for a few greedy, unscrupulous individuals to gain access to your wallet! The ONLY way to lose weight and get in shape is to eat less than the body requires on a daily basis so that it will use fat stores as fuel and, Viola’, weight comes off! Weight Watchers is probably the best place to learn how to eat right AND lose weight safely. I am a nurse practitioner and have seen many patients who want a magic pill for everything! Sorry, you have to work at this one!

  7. Jus'Sayin' says:

Just saying, appreciate the comments, but I sure wish people would learn the difference between “your” and “you’re.” When you’re trying to say “you are” it’s “you’re.” When it’s something that’s yours, it’s “your.”

  8. Webster says:

Diet: what a person, animal or community habitually eats.

I don’t see anything in that definition about losing weight.

  9. Cica says:

I dont know what this stuff is made of….yes it looks to easy just sprinkle on food and not changing the way we eat it just scary …..I just joined WW yesterday, it teaches me portion control and healthy choices to make….a way of eating for the rest of my life…….maybe this is a quick fix but probably not a long term…..

  10. LeeAnn says:

SENSA is a waste of money! Not only does it not work, but make sure you read the fine print beofre ordering. If you do not cancel your “membership” and return what’s left within 30 days they will charge you $97 per month on your card. When I called to find out why they charged my card they told me it was “policy” and the best they could do was to refund $45 of it. Even the Supervisor, who told me she was just doing this as a courtesy, was rude.

  11. Victoria says:

    Hi everyone,
I ordered the free trail, paid the $4.95 in shipping and THEN read the reviews. Terrified to have my card charged a whole bunch, I called to cancel the next day. I told them that I would just purchase Sensa through GNC instead of having it mailed to me, in order to avoid having my card charged monthly. I still may try this product from GNC as I have read some reviews of real people having success with it, but this way I will not have to worry about potential overdraft fees, etc.. I was on hold for about a half hour, but the person I spoke with was friendly enough and she cancelled everything for me. We will see if I still end up getting charged, but it seems that everything has been taken care of. Perhaps it helped to tell her that I would be purchasing the product still, but just at the retailer instead? Also, I was nice and friendly with her as well. Even if you’re angry/frustrated/upset, it never helps to be rude to customer service!

    • Sam M says:

I just ordered Sensa also and after reading the reviews Im considering cancelling it tomorrow. By chance did the charge still show up on you statement?

  12. John says:

If you want to lose weight you stop eating more food than you need. Eat 5-6 LIGHT meals a day not LARGE (which appears is what overweight people do). If you eat 5-6 light meals a day you will feel like you eat more and it speeds up your metabolism. A fast metabolism=lose weight naturally.

    • April says:

Ive been thinking about doing Sensa to help with weight loss most people think because of my size that i am just an over eater an that is as far from the truth as can be. ive maintained this weight for more than 12 years and it is from getting the depo shot i would really like to just be thin again..

      • me says:

April, the depo shot is so bad for you. Birthcontrol as a whole is nothing but experimental, I don’t care how long the pills have been around. I was on the depo shot for nearly a year and all it did for me was make me depressed and irritable. I had constant spotting for the entire time I was on it. If that’s what’s making you overweight, I strongly suggest you get off it. I can’t imagine what its doing to your body. Use a condom or something, they have alternates to latex if you have an allergy. The weight loss industry has the same mentality as birthcontrol. Most substances are not fda tested or approved, but are still on the market. Look at phenphen. It destroys the body.

  13. Lorraine says:

The Shopping Channel is hyping Sensa today as their show stopper for $197.49 (6 month supply). I need to lose a lot of weight and need all the help I can get (yes, I am exercising but food is the real problem). Anyway, I decided to check out the product on the web (looking for comments from users, etc.) and found this site. After reading the comments, I have decided not to purchase Sensa and just keep to my daily struggle. If I don’t give up, surely I will start to see results.

    • Wanda says:

Like many, I’ve tried just about everything. The only thing that works is expending more energy than the calories you put in your mouth. However, you have tot ake in enough calries or your body thinks your starving and goes into stravaiton mode and you wont; lose an ounce. Eating a nutritious balanced meal plan is way easier said than done, but any program that shows long-term results AND has a support system in place can help. Weight Watchers is relatively inexpensive, the program works if you follow it, and they have loads of support in person and online. Other long-term programs that sell you portion-controlled foods and support also work, but you have to re-learn how to eat when you eventually stop paying for prepared meals, and I think you can only do that is to buy your own groceries and prepare your own meals. Atkins or Jenny Craig, etc. can help you jump-start the weight loss, but for long-term results, the research consistently shows that “diets” don’t work; only a lifestyle change does.

      • Kimberly says:

I know there are a lot of people out there that are having trouble with the nutrition part of dieting. I’ve had my own struggles with reaching my goal weight and maintaining it. Miracle pills don’t work and when they tell you that you don’t have to change your eating habits or your lifestyle, their lying to you. One thing i have found that works for me is a program called Body for Life. it helps with not only the exercise part of dieting but also the nutrition part. Their is also a guide to help you keep track of your workouts, your food intake, and your emotional status. If you can’t get the motivation to lose weight not even this will help you.

  14. Gail says:

Holy cow… I just called to take advantage of their free 30 day offer and I’m still on the phone… they are all automated and you have to respond to each and every offer. I’m afraid to hang up because they might send all this stuff to me if I don’t respond. I’ve now been on 16 minutes and going… wow… wish I had never called…

  15. DONNA AMBROGIO says:

SO FAR I LOVE SENSA ONE QUESTION WHEN I PUT SENSA ON MY SALAD WITH TURKEY AND CHEESE WITH VINEGAR AND OIL I DON’T FILL AS FULL IS THIS BECAUSE I SPRINKLED IT WITH A LIQUID (vinegar and oil ? OTHER THEN THAT I LOVE IT

  16. Lori says:

This is the biggest joke. My sister-in-law has been using sensa for a year and she pretty much wasted a ton of money. Not only has she not lost a single pound but she has gained a few. Such a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Nick says:

Any “diet” that tells you anything other than “eat right and exercise” is a fraud. You can’t eat like a pig and not do anything and expect to lose weight. How bad do you want to lose weight? Make it happen. Force yourself to have will power.

  18. Karen says:

If the point of Sensa is to make you feel full so you won’t eat as much, try drinking an 8 oz. glass of water about 20 minutes before you eat. That will do the same thing.

    • Matthew says:

Karen, I would actually recommend against this theory as it has been speculated that drinking fluids or water like that can actually lead to worse results due to diluting the natural enzymes in your stomach that breakdown food. I myself am a believer of this as I have not changed my diet or excerise routine and have seen much better results since cutting the amount of liquids I take in before and during meals. I usually have a drink about 20 – 30 minutes after eating.

    • Janet says:

I do have to say good ole Weight Watchers works. You just have to stick with it to make the changes.Everyone ,me included wants the magic bullet to get the weight off. It took many years to put it on, its going to take many months to get it off,if your smart about it.Exercise is a key component to lose it and not giving in to the cravings. When ever I get hungry before I am due to have a snack or meal I mix a tablespoon or two of wheat germ in a glass of warm water and drink it,it helps take the edge off and when I do eat I fill up faster and it helps transport fat out of my body before it can attach to a cell and store it up.

  19. Tobie says:

Im so confused, i Really thought sensa worked but now im douubting it. im really overweight and want to loose weight.

  20. Jes Beard says:

All you have to do is look at the ingredients to see that there is no real value to the product. They are required to list the ingredients on the packaging, so presumably they are accurate. The ingredient list is as follows: Maltodextrin, Tricalcium Phosphate, Silica, Natural Flavors and Artificial Flavors. In other words it has a common food additive made from starch (Maltodextrin) that is a mild sweetener, and an anti-caking agent (Tricalcim Phospate) so the powdery Maltodextrin doesn’t clump together and Silicon Dioxide (which is also used to prevent caking… and which over time can lead to silicosis, bronchitis, or cancer, as the dust becomes lodged in the lungs and continuously irritates them, reducing lung capacities, and has been linked to increased rates of dementia), and natural flavors and colors. That’s it. There is nothing more to the product.

  21. Betty says:

Thanks for the info. My husband was convinced that Sensa was his magic for diet loss. I appreciate your honesty and help. Please keep up the good work.

  22. Linda says:

I have never been seriously overweight but have yo-yo dieted for years. When I began working out with a personal trainer he told me I needed to eat more. At the time I was eating about 1000-1200 calories per day and I had no energy. My trainer said that a woman my size should NEVER eat under 1500 calories per day unless being supervised by a dr. So, trusting him I began to eat MORE. To my surprise I began to lose weight, my energy level increased, and my mood improved. It is a fact that if you are not eating enough your BRAIN will do what it has to in order to preserve the body….this in includes depressing the body’s functions so you don’t want to move and use up any of the limited energy the body is receiving. One thing that can cause clinical depression…..not eating enough food (this is documented in medical literatur). I am not saying to overeat. However, in some cases, people need to eat more than they realize to maintain their muscle mass, to maintain their energy and activity level , and maintain healthy brain chemistry.

    • Karen says:

Like Linda, I ate around 1000 to 1200 calories a day, and had NO energy, weighing about 101 pounds. I began eating more, and began feeling GREAT! I now weigh 131, and wish I hadn’t gotten up this high, but having energy has been so wonderful, I wouldn’t go back to what I was.

  23. Elsie says:

omg thanks i was gonna buy the product!

  24. Jadetiger says:

It may help you lose weight but weight lifting and exercise should still be a part of your life too. It tones you, creates greater bone density, combats depression and makes you stronger with more endurance. So telling people they don’t need to exercise anymore or eat healthy is just plain bull.

  25. Cheryl Bass says:

I checked out the ingredients and one was ground insects parts-that alone is enough to lose weight!!! Needless to say I did not use it!!
