Every day you see ads for the HCG diet. They promise that you will lose a pound a day if you just ingest HCG drops (or take the HCG shots). How does it really work, though? And what is HCG?

HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. That’s a lot to say, so for short, it is called the HCG diet. On this ‘diet’ you take daily injections of HCG or you take the HCG drops orally. Then for your diet, you will stick to just 500 calories per day. Just five hundred calories! And this is what causes users to lose weight every day! Users are eating so few calories that the pounds come off.

However, five hundred calories is not even enough to support your brain’s functions throughout the day. Because of this, the body will begin to dip into the body’s stores of protein. This will lower your body’s resting metabolism. You become lightheaded, irritable, you lose your hair…you can even develop thyroid problems that can affect you for the rest of your life.

The FDA approved HCG for certain reproductive problems-not weight loss. In fact, HCG is on the banded substance list in baseball. Back in the 50s, doctors prescribed this diet, and then they realized how dangerous it is…so they stopped. Now, it is back-but it is not being prescribed by doctors.

The other side effects of this so-called diet include headaches, dizziness, mood swings, depression, pelvic pain, swelling of the hands and legs, vomiting and diarrhea.

So, how does HCG work for weight loss? No studies have even proved that it does. It is simply the restricted calorie count that has the pounds coming off, and when you stop with the diet, you will put the weight back on.
