Can Weight Watchers Really Help You Lose Weight?
by Henry Hound on January 28, 2011
Weight Watchers has certainly stood the test of time. Founded back in the late 1960′s, thousands of people have lost weight using this popular weight loss plan.
So, great, right? Go sign up? Not so fast… Weight Watchers may be the oldest, but it’s not the best program for everyone.
Weight Watchers & Its Weaknesses…
|
Pros |
Cons (Flawed) |
| Clever points-based program takes the thinking out of calorie counting. | What else do the points measure? There’s more to weight loss than calories!! (Explanation in a sec…) |
| Classes for group support. | You are the one who gained weight. Shouldn’t YOU rely on YOU to lose the weight? (Maybe, maybe not… keep reading) |
| Thousands have reported success with the program. | The program is lacking in long-term studies to see if participants kept the weight off for good. |
Lose Weight but Stay Unhealthy? (And maybe gain it back?)
I have mixed feelings about weight watchers because for some, Weight Watcher’s has been a saving grace. It does help people get a grip on portions and understanding the caloric cost of one type of food versus the next.
What it lacks, however, is more information and help in choosing very healthy foods (loaded with phytochemicals, antioxidants and fiber) versus foods that may be low in calories (or points), but also lacking in nutritional value.
Remember, even thin people can be unhealthy if they eat poorly.
And what about the group thing? I’m not gonna’ pick on this too much because I know support is a good thing when a person’s trying to lose weight.
BUT, some folks theorize that part of the lack of long-term results with weight loss may be due to this group effort. Once the group is done (and you probably won’t continue for life), will you have what it takes to stay strong and keep the weight off?
Don’t Want to Count Points or Go to Class? I have another option… and it won’t cost you a single penny!!
FREE! My 100% free weight loss report will help get you on the right track towards weight loss. Rather than rely on a points system, why not learn what to choose based on some very simple guidelines.
We all know when we make obvious dieting mistakes (snarfing down a bag of chips), but what if you’re making mistakes and don’t even know it? What if I told you there are foods that will keep you fat and foods that can help you burn fat?
And guess what? They could have the very same caloric content… but one is bad for your waistline and the other is good!

I want to thank you for the weight loss report . I started on it 2/23/11 as of today I have lost 23 lbs. and feel great ! I am exercising and lifting weights along with the clean eating. This is the first plan that has helped me keep losing and not crave anything like I always did on other eating plans. again thanks for getting me on the right path I am so happy I found your website!”

“Henry,
Great download! I am a real skeptic – especially with downloads, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by your write-up. It makes sense! A friend recommended Sensa and after reading your site, I am (once again) too skeptical to try.”
Thanks again,
Beth

June 28, 2012 AT 6:12 pmI absolutely love weight watchers. I have under active thyroid and losing weight for me is very difficult. I tried everything but the scale kept going up. I tried WW in Sept of 10' and by June 11' I had lost 53 lbs. Since then I have been in a car accident and kind of lost my motivation and gained 10 lbs back. I started again and I'm down 12. WW is a wonderful program that would work for ANYBODY if they actually follow the program.

March 19, 2012 AT 3:05 pmOMG WW is the best program ever. I have tried it in the past without much success. There was a very good reason why though. The rule is "write everything you bite". I would cook a meal for my family and taste this and that.. THAT COUNTS!!!!!!!!!!!! Alcohol is a lot of points. I would have a couple of drinks a night. They are full of sugar with no health value. You can eat anything you want. You can earn extra points if you work out. If I know I am going to need more points, I workout harder and earn them. This is a life long healthy eating habit plan, not a diet. I love it and I have lost 15 pounds since January 2, 2012. I am now in a size 4 and happier than ever!!!!! Thanks WW!!!!

February 10, 2012 AT 8:32 pmI used WW for 3 weeks and lost 5 lbs but quit...guess I wasn't motivated enough to lose weight to eat their food. The frozen food wasn't bad but didn't care for their regular meals. Remember, if you quit your first month, there's a hefty fee to pay but if you stay on it at least 2 months and quit, I think the fee is removed but that was 2 years ago. They didn't give me a chance to pick out my own food as they were supposed to.Find out these things B-4 you sign up. You need to spend money on salads, vegies, etc. yourself.

April 6, 2012 AT 3:11 pmJudy what on earth are you talking about? You don't have to purchase Weight Watcher foods to be on the diet. The foods they sell at the centers are optional. Are you talking about the frozen foods at the market? That is completely optional. I think you have this program confused with another one - maybe Jenny Craig or Nutri System? Your post makes no sense about fees and foods. On WW you make your own meals and count the points using their tools so you can keep track of how many points consumed each day. Depending on the start weight - for example Female, weighing 170 lbs would eat 29 points a day and an extra allowance of 49 per week. You don't even need to pay a membership fee to follow this program and the group meetings are optional. If you buy the points book that is all you need. It's easy.

March 19, 2012 AT 3:07 pmJOIN!!!! I love online. I do not have time for meetings. I know some people need the meetings, but online works for me. Also, the points calculator is wonderful. I have the app on my phone, but it is easier to pull out the points calculator (about $10.00 if you are a member) and calculate something in the grocery store to decide if I want to buy it or not. I love being able to look things up so easily online. I love it. I have lost 15 pounds since January 2, 2012 and I am now a size 4 and cannot be happier.

February 29, 2012 AT 6:59 amI just joined WW online looking to lose about 30 lbs. I have only been doing it since the 24th (today is the 29th) and I have already lost 4 lbs and my clothes are fitting much better. I love the online, and the great thing about WW is they don't just count calories like some people assume, they calculate protein, fiber, fat, and carbs and then give you a point for a specific food. I would really recommend it, if you haven't signed up already!

January 25, 2012 AT 11:39 pmI love your site. With that being said, you may need to revisit your "interpretation" of Weight Watchers. Your 'Weight Watchers and Its Weakness - Pros and Cons' are slightly flawed in an of itself and is misleading. Someone who was to read the above comments who was not familiar with WW is getting erroneous information. "Weight Watchers may be the oldest, but it’s not the best program for everyone." WW encourages - 100% - healthy eating and good food choices. However, they also offer options for people who choose to not eat healthily all the time and the systems still works. I've done many weight loss programs and WW was the only one that worked, well and easily, for the long term...as long as I continued to eat healthily. Like with any eating method, once you fall off the wagon, if you don't get back on, you're going to gain the weight back eventually (Even then, it took a long time and two torn and repaired ACLs over three years to put it all back on). As you even encourage in your Health Hound's Fast, Safe, and Effective Way to Lose Weight Quickly download...If eating healthily isn't the best program for everyone, I don't what is. p.s. I had the option to stay at the meetings but when it came down to it, I was the one who gained the weight, I am the one who lost it, and I am the one who gained it back and it wasn't beacause I was eating healthily. I am now the one losing it again, with your help, WW help, and MY efforts. Thanks for the great info and give WW more bones.

December 31, 2011 AT 12:42 pmI have been on EVERY diet known to man kind, and finally I came back to the only sensible plan that works. WW has allowed me to lose 62 lbs of fat since January 18th of this year. I am thrilled. I eat pizza. I eat vegetables and fruit. I eat lasagna. I eat lean proteins. Get the pattern here? I can eat some of the previously forbidden foods in moderation, just not all on the same day! I have cake and cookies too. Just not often. I eat lean protein, lots of veggies and my bag of 94% FF popcorn nightly. I am losing weight. Is it blazing fast? No! I am averaging about 1.2 lbs a week. I feel great. I look great and I will see goal. I also will do this for the rest of my life. It is easy peasy..if you are willing to track, weigh and measure your food. I am. It is just like a diabetic needs to do certain things to keep their blood sugar in check. I am fat. I need to weigh, measure and track my food. Thanks WW for always working to improve the program. I love it. Points Plus is the best!

November 11, 2011 AT 4:55 amI am on Pro Points at weight watchers and have lost 25 pounds in 12 weeks. I found it easy from day one. I have not just opted to make my unhealthy lifestyle fit inside the point system by trimming it down a bit, but have changed my whole approach to food and eating. I have removed all chocolate and cakes from my shopping list and upped the amount of fruit and veg that I buy. I limit my fruit to 3 portions a day to make sure my fructose intake does not shoot up and undo the good work. I still buy meat, but look for leaner cuts and make the same amounts of meat that I used to divide between 2 of us go much further. I cook nearly everything from scratch and only occasionally have weight watchers meals for those times when I really have not got time to cook. I think that weight watchers products are over priced and many of them taste bad. I do rely heavily on the yougurts because they are the lowest pointed yogurts around (I have checked them all out). I also use the Shape delight deserts coupled with fruit to make more substantial deserts for main meals. I track everything so I know what I am eating and I have also cut out fizzy sugary drinks and drink a lot of plain and fizzzy water. This is a lifestyle change not a diet and it has made me think very carefully about the content of what I eat. My will power generally is lousy, but I have found it very easy to stick to this and now 12 weeks in I find normal chocolate and shop bought cakes too sweet. I'd rather make my own and know what goes into them. I do still allow myself the occasional treats and sometimes have takeaways and stick within my points, but they are occasional not daily or even twice daily. This is the issue, where people just think that they can eat what they want when they want and not pay any price. I feel better for losing the weight and going forward know that the changes I have made in my life will be permanent. I may put some weight back on in the future, but if I do then I will just re-asses my eating habits again and get back on track. I know how to do this now or more to the point I know how important it is to do this. The old adage "every thing in moderation" is very true. There is nothing wrong with the occasional chocolate bar or once or twice a month having a take away, but too many people live their lives just eating this food and that is why we are becoming a nation of fatties. I think that a return to war time rationing might just be the ticket to help people re-evaluate their attitude to food and learn how to place value on the right foods.

September 15, 2011 AT 9:18 amWeight Watchers is the absolute BEST weight loss program around. Throughout my life I have tried every "diet" there is. One of the greatest things about Weight Watchers is that it is NOT a diet. It is a way of life, and it teaches you how to be aware of what you are putting in your mouth, and to become a healthier, slimmer you! In 8 months I have lost over 40 pounds and gained many lasting friendships!

That's what helps you to keep on keeping on, are people that are going thru the same thing and are willing to help any way they can. It feels so good to share your thoughts and get positive feedback. Lots of easy recipes to pick up each week and alot of different ideas. If you seriously want to get weight off there is no other place to go but WW.It will be time well spent. thank you, Beverly from Antioch, Tennessee

March 25, 2011 AT 8:48 pmI have been weight watchers twice once when I was a young teen and I was active in school sports so a lot of the weight came off easy counting points was okay I had to learn to use them properly. I used weight watchers the second time but I used the core plan. Again I lost some weight though I couldn't be as active as I was before due to college and work. I have not tried the plus points yet maybe might do it. I am though sketchy on it. I mean I do like I can eat what I want but I guess I will return the core plan if I go back to weight watchers. I understand the freedom of choice but is too much freedom a good thing? When I say that I am not downing the program it works yes but I got frustrated with the points.
ReplyJoan says:
February 10, 2011 AT 5:16 pmWeightWatchers is the best weight loss program because it allows YOU to select the foods you enjoy.... BUT their points must be counted and you must use portion control, except for the "O Point" items. This is NOT a diet, it is a healthy lifestyle. Americans eat huge portions, eat out too often and we celebrate every event with food (and the wrong kind of food). I recommend joining for as long as it takes to lose half your goal, and after that you should be able to continue on your own - unless you have no self discipline, in which case you must continue to attend meetings and be weighed in. After all, you spend $520 a year on meetings.... you may prefer to eventually decide to do it on your own and put the money towards new clothes. The hardest part of my program is the inevitable Plateau where the scales refuse to acknowledge your efforts for anything up to 3 weeks! During this phase, distract yourself with new projects, good books, movies, joining an activity or club - anything to disperse the depression caused by the Plateau! I have lost 35 lbs and plan to continue - alone - to lose the remaining 15 lbs. WW is great! They give you the tools you need ... then it is up to you.

In the past i have lost over thirtyfive pounds and would have kept it off had I not had more children. February 7, 2011 AT 9:43 amI am a life time member of WW. I float in an out of meetings as needed and returned yesterday to start again in the new plan. They keep advertising about this new and improved plan but one of the most used and necessary aids is unavailable at all locations until "MARCH SOMETIME". That should be an addition to the advert. The introductory packet lists the ever growing lists of WW produced foods that do list the POINTS PLUS #. That is not what WW has always been about. The key was to learn how to select all food from the local grocery not just WW. Shame on WW. I sincerely hope that whoever is to blame on the short fall in ordering the calculators is no longer employed by WW. I won't be back to the meetings but will be checking with friends as to the availability of the calculator and am hoping that it will return at the same reasonable price. Otherwise I will consider it a scam.

February 6, 2011 AT 12:43 pmI'm overhelmed by everyone's response and defense of WW. I've been a "repeat offender" of ww for years and have lost 8.5 lbs in less than a month on this program. I am glad to see that they are now taking carbs into the point factor on the new point plus system. It encourages you to eat fruit and veggies. I was on Atkins in the past and gained every pound back and them some. WW is much healthier and I love my carbs too much to stay with Atkins for any length of time. I'm never hungry, have broken some bad habits by learning how to make healthier choices. I travel for my work and I can say that I was successful loosing 30lbs in the past regardless of that challenge. It will be even easier this time knowing I can eat all the veggies and fruit that I want on the Points Plus program. WW has worked for years and FOR A GOOD REASON! They have NEVER hawked their products BTW.

February 5, 2011 AT 8:35 pmIt took me 2 years to lose 30 pounds and I've kept it off for 5 years! Counting points got easier and easier. Not rocket science. Weight Watchers is not a diet and that's why it works. Doesn't hurt to know how to count, either!
ReplyJo-Anne says:
February 5, 2011 AT 6:59 pmWeight Watchers encourages you to be mindful of what you put in mouth, but in terms of points counted and proportion sizes. My problem has been mindless eating/emotional eating and proportions that are way too large. When I track my eating I'm amazed at how often I was eating when I wasn't even hungry! I think as North Americans we have a tendency to eat as if it were an activity, a hobby, a past-time. With the new Points Plus System I reach for real foods now - fruits and vegetables. I am mindful of when I am actually hungry and I appreciate good food. I still love food and the sensation of tasting and eating but I also appreciate feeling even 10 pounds lighter. I just feel better overall and I know Weight Watchers works for me. I also exercise - run 2 times a week for 30 minutes through a ravine and work out at a gym, etc. - but really, it's what you put in your mouth. If you are eating fat and sugar, your body will pay the price. Weight lose is 80 percent food and 20 percent what you eat. I find exercising releases endorphins and I feel great afterward. A bonus to my healthy food choices. I love Weight Watchers and hope to lose another 20 pounds and become a lifetime member by reaching my optimal goal weight. I was in WW 15 years ago and I regret not keeping up the lifestyle after losing 20 pounds.

February 5, 2011 AT 4:18 amIf you had any real concerns about ww before I would think that the astounding response you've received in response to your comments should dispel them. I personally have been on ww for a month and 4 days now and have lost 15lbs. That came from carefully planning my meals (to make sure I actually eat all my points) and between 30 - 60 min of exercise a day. The only thing I do agree with in your comments above is that we were the ones who gained the weight and that we need to rely on ourselves to lose it again. I personally use the online only program, but even the support I receive from the online community plays a part in my success. I think everyone here needs to realize that your comments aren't necessarily to put down ww but to get all of us to read your weight loss report. I do appreciate the opinions and information you have provided on the various plans... but as a whole I really think you should update your info... at least research the changes they have made to ww so you can provide accurate information.

February 4, 2011 AT 1:57 pmI just recently joined WW also..three weeks ago. Shame to the person who says that they "hawk" their products at their meetings. That is not the truth!! They have the products to purchase if you like, but I have never heard anyone "hawk" the product. I think WW is the most valid of the weight loss programs that are out there. You use regular food, which they help you to use with awesome recipes (the 5 ingredient cookbook is the BOMB!!). You are not purchasing diet foods provided by a company that keeps you "hooked" to their foods in order to lose the weight. AND you can reach Lifetime Membership and not have to pay for the classes...can you do that in other weight loss programs where you have to purchase their food. Not likely!! If you reach your goal and you want to keep the weight off..hmmmm you either have to continue using their foods or gain the weight back because you have not been taught how to eat properly, control portions or eat foods that are nutrient rich, etc. So, anyone who slams the WW program hasn't really tried it. WW is not a diet, it's a way of healthy eating that has a plus side...you lose weight!! Love it!

February 3, 2011 AT 7:37 pmThe new points plus program is very good. They look at protein, carbs, fibre and fat instead of the old way of calories fat and fibre. Fruits are now 0 points as well as veggies. I am loving this new points plus program! Foods that are not so good for you are now quite a bit higher, therefore, encouraging people to reach for healthier food. Also I think a diet that can incorporate just about any food is a good thing. People are not going to always eat healthy and they need to learn to incorporate treats into life once in a while. I think it really helps people (it does me) to be accountable to someone. If it were just me doing this I'd be much more likely to cheat. As for long term studies.....really...it's a persons own doing if they gain the weight back. Weight watchers has FREE weigh ins and meetings for lifetime members. People who reach goal should take advantage of that!!
ReplyKendra says:
February 3, 2011 AT 1:38 pmActually, the program even 10 years ago took into account: calories, fiber and fat. That is what determines the points of a food. They also push you to drink water, eat lean protiens, get your omega 3 fatty acids, exercise, and try new foods. Because it doesn't limit you from eating any one food, your diet should contain a wide variety of foods which is optimal for good nutrition. It also really teaches you about portion control. Weighing in holds you accountable. The recipe database at WW online is amazing. many I kept off the weight for 3 years after hitting life time. I then had 3 babies and have been yo yo dieting ever since. I am going back to weight watchers tonight.

The snack products for sale at meetings are there for those that NEED to have their chocolate, chips, etc. Using a WW product ensures that they have chosen something that will be easy to account for in the Plan. NO ONE is ever forced or pushed to buy them. The meetings are valuable in losing the weight. You have the accountability of the weigh in. You learn what it takes to not only lose the weight but to sustain it for life. Exercise is encouraged. Weight Watchers is not a DIET. Going on a DIET implies that you will then go OFF the diet. February 1, 2011 AT 1:02 pmI have spent a lotttttt of money over the years for diet pills and weight loss systems. I have finally learned to check things out before spending to have a better chance of not being scammed. I don't mind spending money on products that make sense and truly work.

February 1, 2011 AT 10:51 amThey have completely overhauled the program and now Weight Watchers is having people concentrate more on the quality of the food. There are thousands of lifetime members who have kept the weight off for years. Thanks for your wonderful work that you do. I am one of those who would generally succumb to a fad diet every couple of years and waste money. Your hard work is wonderful!

February 1, 2011 AT 2:56 pmhowever, at their meetings, the facilitator/leader continues to hawk WW products which are full of chemicals that enhance shelf life, food-grade plastics, etc. so much for healthier choices.

February 2, 2011 AT 10:24 amI am a WW lifetime member. I have never been to a meeting where they pushed their products. They are available if you choose to buy them. There is no miracle diet out there people. Eat less and move more is what I learned at WW. Also, WW is not a diet, they show you how to eat and live life and make better choices.

February 2, 2011 AT 2:38 pmI completely agree with Becky. WW is not a diet. It's a way of life. The weight didn't happen over night...and it won't come off over night. Unfortunately, you do need to put a effort into it...and you need to continue to keep it off. The program doesn't fail, people fail! They think they can lose weight and then go back to bad habits. Guess what...it doesn't work that way. If you have a problem with putting on weight, then you have to constantly be aware of what you are eating and you need to move more. WW doesn't push products on people and in fact, they do push healthy eating. A healthy lifestyle. You need to meet your healthy guidelines every day with the daily recommended servings of fruits and veggie and dairy and fat...etc. So, I think, it perhaps one of the best programs out there.

February 3, 2011 AT 8:15 amI just joined weightwatchers 3 weeks ago. This is my second time of joining. The first time was many years ago. I lost weight and kept it off until we moved several years later. When we moved, I got out of my exercise routine because I didn't have a nearby track to run on, and the weight started coming back on. It is a different point system now that considers four different things--not just calories. Well, it never considered just calories before anyway. I love weight watchers! It works! I feel better already. I have lost weight and do not feel deprived. I am eating much healthier--going to fast food places has stopped. My body now craves the healthy things. This is not a diet; it is a lifestyle. My leader has shown us how to fit exercise in by simply moving, no matter what our job or life demands. They do not push their products but they make them available. Their website offers hundreds of recipes made out of ingredients we have at home. I can't think of one thing in this organization that could be considered a scam--it just isn't! It works and it's healthy!

February 2, 2011 AT 12:04 pmI especially like the "eat less, move more". That's very catchy, useful and easy to remember. I'm liking more and more what I hear about WW. It's good to know they keep evolving, keeping current.

February 2, 2011 AT 9:45 amI have just joined the new weight watchers pro points and downloaded the app on my iphone, I am able to keep track of what I eat and check food points on the spot, the new pro points system takes everything into account not just calories - As I have all the info at my fingertips I don't feel the need to force myself to go to the meetings and being able to use my iphone keeps me interested, I can also record any activities that I do and record my liquids, fruit & veg and dairy intakes - I must admit, that I have never been any good at dieting I have finally found a way that has sparked my interest :)
